Organic nitrates such as glyceryl trinitrate (GTN) are available in several different dosage forms, e.g. sublingual, oral and topical. The requirement for so many pharmaceutical preparations stems mainly from the short-lived pharmacological effect of these compounds and the resultant attempts to prolong it.
