The Role of Organizational Size in the Heterogeneous Nature of Corporate Entrepreneurship

The corporate entrepreneurship (CE) literature has proliferated across a variety of research contexts in recent years, but little attention has been paid to the impact of each setting on the CE activity itself. We argue that organizational size is an important factor contributing to the heterogeneity of CE and may help fundamentally explain different phenomena that have been treated under the same conceptual umbrella. Through a systematic search of the CE literature published since 2000 in top journals, we argue that there has been a bias towards examining CE dimensions within the context of large public firms, even though they represent a relatively small proportion of the firms that engage in CE activities. Based on our review and drawing upon multiple theoretical frameworks, we identify the important ways in which organizational size impacts the antecedents, processes, and outcomes of CE activities in firms.
