Patchwork aus dem frühen Mittelalter : Konservierung eines Moorfundes

1998
After a long period of display, a man's garment, discovered as a bog-find at the beginning of the 20th century, was in need for renewed conservation care. A detailed investigation of the cloth reveals that it was composed of 45 separate parts of different wool fabrics assembled in patchwork-style. Conservation involved both wet cleaning and stabilisation by stitching with the development of a special mounting for exhibition purposes as the final stage. Particularly noteworthy about the tunic from Bernuthsfeld is that it could be identified as a product of the Early Middle-Ages on behalf of observations based on textile technology characteristics. Thus, the tunic is much younger as initially assumed by archaeologists. Radiocarbon dating confirmed the results achieved by the conservator's examination.
