Inhibitory potential of proteinase inhibitors from brinjal against Leucinodes orbonalis guen.

2013
Potential of proteinase inhibitors (PIs) from brinjal and its wild relatives against Leucinodes orbonalis guen. was studied. Six isoforms of Leucinodes gut proteinases were observed in the electrophoretic visualization ranging from 94.67 KDa to 25.97 KDa. Total proteinase activity up to 2.51 U/gut, tryptic activity up to 1.63 U/gut and chymotryptic activity up to 1.06 U/gut was observed in total proteinases activity analysis. The higher protein content was found in Solanum tarum (4.02 mg/g of seed flour) and lowest protein was found in ASBR-2 (1.68 mg/g of seed flour). In insect bioassay, larval weight and growth reduction was observed after feeding L. orbonalies larvae on diet supplemented with increasing concentration of PIs shows resistance potential against L. orbonalies. S. xanthocarpum and S. nigrum promises the best among the studied genotypes for giving potent PI's activity, which can be exploited for developing management strategies against L. orbonalis.
