2009
In a set of experiments with a model culture of the brackishwater copepod Calanipeda aquae dulcis, an accurate differentiation between alive and killed (formaldehide fixation, heat shock) specimens was achieved after staining them with the vital dyes neutral red (NR) and fluorescein diacetate (FDA, final concentration of 5 g ml-1). Staining patterns of the copepods were independent of their age. The FDA-staining protocol looks promising as an accurate viability assay in studies of marine zooplankton.
