Liquid crystalline behaviour of polymers on the basis of p-butyloxyphenyl p-hydroxybenzoate depending on the nature of the polymer main chain and length of the spacer group

The synthesis and some properties of four monomers containing p-butyloxyphenyl p-hydroxybenzoate groups are described. The dependence of mesomorphic properties of monomers on chemical structure of polymerizable group and length of spacer group is studied. The monomer M-10 in nematic state tends to homeotropic orientation. Liquid crystalline polymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization of the monomers in dioxane solution. According to data of thermal analysis, polarizing microscopy and X-ray diffraction all the polymers exhibit smectic mesophase over wide temperature range.
