CAS E REPORT SURPRIS INGLY HEALING OF TRANS ECTED MENTAL NERVE

2012
The mental nerve can be damaged as a result of trau ma, local anaesthesia, tumor and cyst removal, imp lant placement, removal of teeth and iatrogenic factors. A 11 year-old male patient was referred fro m his dentist to our department with the chief co mplaint of pain swelling and extraoral fistula in the submental reg ion. Left mental nerve was damaged as comp lete transection as a result of trau ma during the removal of teeth and cyst. The nerve was repaired neurosurgically at the time of surgery. Although one end of the mental nerve at buccal side on periosteum was unclear, nerve transposition was neurosurgically attemped to repair through end to end anastomosis between the free end of the nerve and closest part of the nerv e on periosteum on buccal side. At the 26 weeks of follow-up period, all symptoms and anesthesia were interestingly resolved and the patient had no other complaints. This unexpected healing success of the procedure in rapid healing and full recovery would be associated with intervention for repairing at the time o f surgery, tension -free repair, young aged and healthy patient, having good recovery potential of the mental nerve. This treat ment method would be considered to use
