The present invention relates to mutants in which DNA sequence and amino acid sequence of an epidermal growth factor (EGF) are modified. The present invention provides mutant EGF protein with enhanced heat stability and stability in an aqueous solution state and a gene coding the same. Also, the present invention provides a recombinant vector comprising the gene and microorganisms transformed by the recombinant vector. In addition, the present invention provides a cosmetic composition for growing skin cells and promoting skin regeneration comprising the protein, gene, or recombinant vector. The EGF mutants of the present invention: have enhanced solubility for the aqueous solution and heat stability during distribution and storage processes unlike conventional natural EGF products; and can produce functional cosmetics which maintain the activities. In order to achieve the objective, the mutants are prepared by: selecting parts not related to an active site of the EGF using a tertiary structure of the EGF and a homology alignment method among species, and protein molecular modeling using a computer; and performing methodical modification experiments.
