Effect of Adenotonsillectomy on Oxidative DNA Damage Levels in Children with Obstructive Sleep APNEA
2020
Objective: We performed the present study to confirm whether there is a relationship between the OSA and serum malondialdeheyde and leukocyte 8-deoxy 2-deoxyguanosine levels before and after adenotonsillectomy. Methods: The children whom underwent adenotonsillectomy for OSA between April 2011 and April 2019. Total number of the patients was 46 (25 male, age range 10-16 years). In preoperative period and 3 months after adenotomsillectomy; AHI, sleepiness scala, BMI, and O2 saturations were recorded. In both periods the blood samples were collected. Results: Postoperative Epworth scales were less than 10 points in 67.8% of children. While the AHI of patients were observed preoperatively as 12-37and O2 saturation 80-94%, the respective values were 1-10 and 92-98% at postoperative period. The difference between the pre and post operative levels of MDA and 8-OHdG was statistically significant (p Conclusions: The present study showed that adenotonsillectomy lowers oxidative DNA damage in children with OSA.
