ThenorthernshelfoftheGibraltarStraitadjacenttotheCamarinalSill hasbeeninvestigatedbyanalysingasetofseismicprofilesandside-scan sonarrecords.Wehaveidentifieddeformedbasementrocks,formedmainly bythematerialsoftheFlyschComplexUnits.Theseflysch-typerockscom posetheGibraltarArcfold-and-thrustbeltandarecoveredbyPlioceneto Quaternarypost-orogenicdeposits.Inthestudyshelfarea,thesedimentary coveroccurringovertheruggedpaleo-reliefoftheflysch-typebedrockex hibitstwodepocentres;thelargestoneisrelatedtothecompleteinfillingof ashelfpaleovalley.Inaddition,theoccurrenceofseveralshelfbedformfields wouldsuggesttheinfluenceofacycloniceddyofthesurfaceAtlanticwater. WeinterpretthatthelocationandaccumulationofthePliocene-Quaternary sediment depocentres are led by the interplay between eustatic/tectonic eventsandtheoceanographicpatternsprevailinginthestudyarea,which leavetheirimprintatdifferentspatialandtemporalscales.
