Study of numerical representation of constant surface stress forms of tension membranes

1999
The paper discusses common approaches in numerical modelling of lightweight tension structures represented by membrane forms in a state of constant surface stress. Several examples of constant surface forms are presented and one of them, known as Scherk's minimal surface is chosen for discussion of accuracy, criteria for stopping the iterations, and convergence of the numerical algorithms employed. The need to reduce the cost of computational modelling through more efficient, more robust and user-friendly software that would deal with shape-finding, static/wind load analysis and cutting patterns still remains to be addressed. Specific areas for improvement are suggested.
