DSA and 5G Adaptation to Military Communications

2020
There are many security challenges that face adapting 5G to military communications that can be addressed with dynamic spectrum access (DSA) techniques. This chapter briefly discusses areas where 5G can address security vulnerabilities but focuses mostly on DSA‐related security enhancements over the air‐interface. It focuses on how to modify the 5G multiple input multiple output (MIMO) module to make it a military grade MIMO module with capabilities such as low probability of interception (LPI)/low probability of detection (LPD), multipath hopping, and multipath dynamic energy distribution. The chapter discusses the multifaceted optimization of multi‐user MIMO channels in military applications. It introduces some examples of security approaches that can be considered for adapting 5G for military applications. The approaches include bottom‐up deployment approach and switching of a network to an antijamming waveform.
