Yugoslavia: Smoking prevention and control, with special reference to the Novi Sad MONICA project

2000
Investigations performed in Yugoslavia and routine statistical data led to the establishment of strategies within the MONICA programme to monitor trends in ischaemic heart disease. Emphasis has been placed on smoking as one of the leading risk factors, since the prevalence is high among the adult population of Novi Sad, with increasing trends among women and young people: a federal commission for control of addictive diseases estimated prevalences of 45% among males and 25–30% among females.
