Het myelodysplastisch syndroom: adviezen voor ijzerchelatie bij secundaire hemochromatose

Summary On behalf of the working party AML/MDS of the Dutch/ Belgian Hemato-Oncology Foundation for Adults in The Netherlands (HOVON), we present a guideline for the treatment of secondary hemochromatosis in myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Secondary hemochromatosis is an insurmountable problem due to frequent blood transfusions in MDS patients. Current diagnosis and treatment strategies are based on expert opinions and consensus guidelines established during international conferences. A Dutch standard is lacking. This article provides an overview of the main literature, providing evidence for the treatment of iron overload in MDS.
