Requirements for the development and implementation of ADAS and C-ITS services for older drivers

2020
We live in an ever-aging world. The percentage of older citizens increases in modern societies with the median percentage of older citizens already at 19.20% of the general population. That percentage is the result of the increase of the elderly percentage by almost 6% in the last twenty years. The ever-increased percentage of older citizens’ population sets new challenges on the planning and provision of transport services. It is, therefore, necessary for both traveler information and driver assistance services to be extended and improved. Pre-trip and on-trip information services need to be provided by taking into account the special needs of older drivers; only that way it will be ensured that the provided information will be perceivable by older drivers. The said fact concerns both technical and physical issues; the provided information should be recognizable visually and audibly, but it should also be ensured that the provided information is easy to perceive by the older drivers. The requirements that need to be met for the mobility of older citizens to be improved are not purely of a technical nature. The majority of older drivers’ needs are sourced in the age-related impairments of this population group. Therefore, the combination of various factors is important. In the framework of this study, the possible effects Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) may have regarding the mobility conditions of older citizens are investigated.
