The invention discloses an instant messaging friend recommendation method and an instant messaging friend recommendation device. The method comprises the steps of obtaining the common friends of a first instant messaging (IM) user and a second IM user, obtaining first intimacy information between the first IM user and the common friends, and second intimacy information between the second IM user and the common friends, and sending the recommendation information of adding the friend to the first IM user and/or the second IM user if the first intimacy information and the second intimacy information both satisfy a preset condition. According to the method, the effectiveness of the recommendation can be improved while recommending friends.
