Polymeric hair conditioners are important components in hair-care products, such as shampoos, mousses, hair treatments and rinses. The evaluation of these cationic polymers requires fast and reproducible laboratory tests in addition to practical tests in the hair dressing salon. With the most important conditioning polymers on the market - polyquaternium 4, 6, 7, 10, 11 and 16 - some important test methods - polyelectrolyte titration, combing force measurement, stiffness test and turbidity measurement - will be presented and comparisons between these products will be conducted. By means of these test methods one gets an overview about the palette of the market relevant conditioning polymers without time consuming salon tests and their possible applications in cosmetic formulations
