Study of an algorithm for electron-hadron separation in modular homogeneous calorimeters

Abstract A criterion for electron-hadron separation based on the method of the momenta of a shower is proposed and studied at length using a detailed Monte Carlo simulation. The criterion is a generalization of the classical measure of the shower width, namely the dispersion of the shower, and can be applied when the incident particle hits the module with its momentum nonparallel to the module longitudinal axis, a case in which the dispersion is not well defined.
