In the title compounds, cis- and trans-3a,8,8-trimethyl-3a,4,5,6,7,7a-hexahydro-4,6-methano-1,3,2-dioxathiolane 2-oxide, C 10 H 16 O 3 S, the five-membered ring adopts a half-chair (envelope) conformation. The orientation of the methyl group C7 substituted on C1, being either cis or trans to the exocyclic S=O bond, is the main structural difference between the two isomers
