Daily Recycled Bicarbonate Dialysis in Treatment for Acute Renal Failure in Critically Ill Patients

We used daily recycled (25 1) bicarbonate HD with polyacrylonitri1e membranes for a total of 383 treatment in 26 critical care patients with ARF. All patients presented multiple organ failure.The mean duration of HD was of 84 mins (range 75–120 ). In 42% HD was performed without heparin. In 9.6% of HD we observed a severe hypotension requiring infusion of saline or macromolecules. Average weight loss was of 912 g (range 6003000). Acid-base status was found to be adequate in 88.7% of HD and no significant pO2 and pCO2 decreases were observed. Altogether our data show that this HD is very well tolerated in critical care ARF patients.
