Usage of Antibiotic as Milk Preservative in the Slums of Khartoum State

2012
The aim of this study is to investigate whether milk sellers in the slums of Khartoum state preserve their milk with antibiotics or not. Thirty milk samples were examined from each selected regions of Khartoum state. Tow tests were carried out, the first for total viable bacteria count, and other for allergy test. The result shows undetected bacteria in some samples and this is reflecting of using antibiotic for milk preservation. The result showed that some sample gave positive reaction for allergy test and this is another confirmation that the samples with no detected bacteria were due to usage of antibiotic. This study conclude that the majority of milk seller in Khartoum used antibiotics as milk preservative and the study recommend that the milk sellers and farmers should not preserve their milk with antibiotic and neither to use or sell milk of cows recently treated with antibiotics.
