Mineral resources of the Mount Pennell Wilderness Study Area, Garfield County Utah

1990
This paper reports on the Mount Pennell Wilderness Study Area is underlain by Mesozoic sedimentary rocks that have been intruded by Tertiary igneous stocks and laccoliths. Several small shafts, adits, prospects, and placer workings for base and precious metals are in and near the study area, but no identified resources are associated with them. Subeconomic measured coal resources of approximately 1.3 million tons occur in the Emery Sandstone Member of the Mancos Shale within the western boundary of the study area. The central part of the study area, which is underlain by an igneous intrusion, has a moderate mineral resource potential for base (copper, lead, tin, molybdenum, and zinc) and precious (silver and gold) metals, and a low mineral resource potential for uranium and vanadium and for coal.
