Effects of whole-journey fasting by road transport and post-transport recovery on the haemotological indices of beef cattle

2012
To study the effcts of Chinese typical long-distance transport and recovery after transport on the haemotological indices of cattle, and then to provide reference to establish rules on the protection of animals during transport and progress vehicle, ten Simmental heifer with(312.6±11.6) kg weight were sampled for hormone, biochemistry, blood and ion analysis, before transports h after unloading and 72 h after unloading respectively. The result showed that there was signifancant increase of FT3,FT4,AST and signifancant decrease of GH,ALP,MCV, Ca~(2+),Mg~(2+) of 0 h after transport compared with pre-transport.And there was no significant changes of COR,ALT, TP,ALB,GLU,LDH,CK,WBC,RBC,HGB,HCT,K~+,BASO%,Na~+,CL~- before and after transport.FT4.GH, AST,Ca~(2+),Mg~(2+) recoveried at 72 h after transport, but COR,ALT,TP,ALB,GLU,LDH,MCV,NEUT%, BASO%,Na~+ and Cl~_ did not.Compared with 0-hour after unloading, there was no significant defference of FT3 or ALP at 72 h after unloading. There was insignifant defference of MONO%or EO%between 72 h after and before transport.LYMPH%at 72 h after unloading increased. The results implied that long-distance transport with fasting induced elevating metaboilic level, liver damaged, ion imbalance, and not damaged immune function.Cattle did not recovered fully until 72 h after unloading. The results of this study are valuable for to establishing rules on the protection of animals during transport and progressing vehicle.
