Treatment of Polyacrylamide Hydrogel Injected Breast Deformity with Subcutaneous Mastectomy and Immediate Bilateral Pedicle TRAM Flaps Reconstruction

2009
Background: Polyacrylamide hydrogel had been used for injected breast augmentation in China by unauthorized physicians for more than 10 years. The complications were noted recently. Injected breasts with complications present a difficult and challenging problem in Taiwan. We herein provided a solution for treating the problem. Aim and Objectives: We used the method to treat the injected breasts with severe symptomatic complication. Materials and Methods: Using subcutaneous mastectomy combined with immediate bilateral deepithelialized pedicle transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap for breast reconstruction. Results: There was no immediate intraoperative complication or donor site morbidity. After 4 year follow-up, the patient was satisfied with cosmetic outcome. Conclusion: Once the injected breasts became symptomatic, subcutaneous mastectomy and immediate reconstruction with bilaterally devided TRAM flaps is a reasonable treatment choice.
