Duo piano recital: "Mantra"

2005
This was a rarely mounted performance of Karlheinz Stockhausen's seminal large-scale (70 minute) work for two pianists. Exploring aspects of music theory (his characteristic "formula" technique), theatrical elements (the pianists evoke Japanese Noh at certain points), music technology (extensive use of "ring modulation"), and pianistic versatility (pianists must also play percussion, and operate radio devices), this work requires a substantial and long-term commitment from performers in preparation. More than a typical performance, preparing an interpretation of this piece requires a thorough and intense period of research into a plethora of issues that do not form part of the average conservatory pianist's training. This performance was recorded for broadcast on KUSC FM, Southern California. Vicki Ray & Liam Vineywith Shaun Naidoo, ring modulator Karlheinz Stockhausen's Mantra (1970) for two pianos
