Analytical and Experimental Analysis of Composite Beam by Using Shape Memory Alloy Wires

2014
In this paper, the shape memory alloy (SMA) wires are used to in a composite beam for a structural control. In this study the Ni55.4%-56.2% and remaining is Ti were used. The wires are to be convert thermal energy into mechanical energy by using heat or electric current. This research presents a brief introduction about the shape memory alloys and their applications in vibration control. The composite beam changes its mechanical behavior by changing temperatures, strain rates and strain amplitudes. The dynamic properties of the beam involving stiffness, energy dissipation and natural frequency are analyzed. The result indicates the proposed Ni-Ti based beam exhibits good energy dissipation ability, compared with conventional materials beam. This study done on composite beam by using SMA wires and epoxy resin and investigate the effects of shape memory alloy on the dynamical properties of a composite beam structure when shape memory alloy wire are centrallybonded to a epoxy beam. Keywords—Shape memory alloy, composite beam, actuation, electrical current, epoxy resin.
