Studies on the Transfer of Yellow seeded Trait from Brassica carinata to B.napus

1996
A novel genotype of yellow seeded Brassica napus ,91I1045,was developed in an interspecific cross between 3 63 4 5 1,a yellow brown seeded line of B.napus ,and Dodolla,a true yellow seeded variety of B.carinata ,after 5 generations of consecutive selection.A comparative investigation shows that seed color and seed shape of 91I1045 are similar to those of Dodolla. The sectional structure of the seed coat of 91I1045 strongly resembles that of Dodolla too, characterized by well developed epidermal and subepidermal layers and well constructed and arranged palisade cells.Like Dodolla,91I1045 developed many branches (18 primary and 34 secondary branches) and set many pods (598 3 on average)on each individual plant. However, its leaf shape, hull proportion and the oil content in each part of the seed are all at an intermediate level between the two parents. And it is near to B.napus in the fundamental characteristics of plant growth and development habit.Cytological observations reveal that the chromosome number of the somatic cells of 91I1045 is 2n=38,the same as Brassica napus .The chromosome configuration at metaphase I of pollen mother cells is 0 05Ⅳ+0 00Ⅲ+18 72Ⅱ+0 37Ⅰ.The higher frequency of chromosome pairing indicates its genomic constitution is in balance both in chromosome number and chromosome structure, despite the involvement of some genic information from Dodolla. Its potential uses in yellow seeded B.napus breeding programs are discussed.
