Ocular Trauma: Diagnosis and Management in Ancient India

Ocular injuries have remained the leading but avoidable cause of vision loss since antiquity. The understanding of pathophysiology and management of ocular trauma has advanced tremendously in last few decades. But the question is how were ocular injuries managed in ancient India? Sushruta, the most celebrated physician and surgeon of ancient India delineates the causes of ocular trauma, its severity, prognosis and management in his famous treatise Sushruta Samhita. It is interesting to know how the people in ancient India used to recognize the extent of ocular damage with limited diagnostic aids and manage it with minimum resources available.
