Assessment of diffusional mobilities of copper and zinc in α-brass

Numerical values for the frequency factors and the activation energies for diffusion of copper and zinc in α-brass are assessed from selected sets of experimental data. The compositional dependence of the optimized parameters is presented in terms of the CALPHAD method. The assessment shows excellent consistency. A discrepancy with some of the early experimental intrinsic diffusion coefficients is found to exist. The issue is discussed in terms of defect accumulation caused by a strong vacancy flux.
