Since 1894, when Finsen published his first paper on the value of the actinic rays in variola, and the year 1895, when Roentgen presented his historical paper to the Physico-Medical Society of Wurzburg, the literature of the general subject of radiotherapy and photo-therapy has accumulated in geometric proportions. It is not the purpose of the present paper to survey this literature, but merely to present the results of our personal observations and experience in the management of cutaneous diseases by the modern method of light treatment. It is worthy of note, however, that while the present therapeutic use of the x -rays was first suggested as a result of accidents occurring in its use for diagnostic and other purposes, the light-treatment of Finsen and his followers is largely the direct and logical outcome of the work of earlier observers, who studied the influence of light in its various forms on certain
