This chapter presents an introduction to the principles of seismic codes and their role in society. The stated purpose of selected seismic codes from around the world are given with a brief history of developments in Italy, Japan and the United States. An outline of the significant provisions of the Uniform Building Code and the NEHRP Recommended provisions are included as well as those of the proposed New York City Seismic Code. The chapter concludes with a discussion of several important ideas contained in the codes of Japan, Mexico and New Zealand and suggestions for future code development.(AU)
