Optimal Design and Test of the 68 kA HTS Current Lead for ITER at CASIPP

2020
The ITER project to demonstrate the feasibility of power generation by nuclear fusion technology requires very large superconducting magnets. These large coils-18 Toroidal Field Coils, six Central Solenoid modules, six Poloidal Field Coils and 18 Correction Coils- are supplied with 60 HTS current leads, ranging from 10 kA to 68 kA. HTS current leads using BSCOO superconductors have the distinctive feature of a high critical current density and a lower thermal conductivity. In order to reduce the operating cost, CASIPP has designed the 10/52/68 kA HTS CLs for ITER. In this paper, the Optimized design of the 68 kA HTS CL is given, the quench performance and the safety behavior in case of a loss-of-flow accident (LOFA) will be described. At last the test results will be discussed.
