Tantalum buttons for localization of malignant melanoma in proton beam therapy.

1980
: A radio-opaque button is described for scleral marking of choroidal malignant melanomas for subsequent proton beam irradiation. Since only one polyester suture is necessary to secure the button, whereas two sutures are required for conventional rings, the risk of inadvertent perforation of the sclera is reduced by one-half.
