Challenging Leadership Status Quo
2010
Organizational structures in corporate business differ fundamentally from those found in a hospital or health care facility. Nurse executives would be wise to understand the organizational structures that come into play and even wiser to remember that titles do not always accurately reflect authority within an organization. For example, holding a line position in a corporation entitles that individual to decide how to deploy resources to achieve the corporation’s business goals. Employees in staff positions provide information and advice to those in line positions. In matrix-based organizations, project managers select from a pool of employees to work on specific assignments, which often results in a single employee working for several managers.
