A process for the hydrogenation of hydrocarbon compounds selected from the group consisting of alkynes, dienes, alkenynes and polyenes (hydrocarbons I) by a gas stream containing hydrogen and a hydrocarbon I, through a hydrogenation zone containing a hydrogenation catalyst, leads, wherein at the beginning of the hydrogenation zone a location with lower geodetic height is considered the end of the hydrogenation zone.
