Symmetry Methods in Diffusion

1992
The diffusion equation with variable coefficient D is explored. It is found that the existence of symmetries in the diffusion equation implies conservation laws associated with D. Since these symmetries can be tested [1], diffusion experiments can be designed to elucidate the nature of D. Not only is this approach superior to the usual method of constrained optimization, it is capable of determining a unique activation enthalpy.
