EnergyTransduction byAnaerobic Ferric IronRespiration in Thiobacillus ferrooxidans

1991
process, uptake ofaminoacids was studied. Glycine uptake bystarved cells didnotoccur intheabsence ofan electron donor, neither underaerobic conditions nor underanaerobic conditions. Uptakeofglycine couldbedriven by formate- andferrous iron-dependent oxygen uptake. Underanaerobic conditions, ferric ironrespiration with theelectron donors formate andelemental sulfur couldenergize glycine uptake. Glycine uptake was inhibited bytheuncoupler 2,4-dinitrophenol. Theresults indicate thatanaerobic ferric ironrespiration can contribute totheenergybudget ofT.ferrooxidans.
