Rural Districts and Regions in Madagascar

2008 
New actors in the local management of the environment as part of the decentralization reforms under way since 1994 have given rural districts (municipalities) in Madagascar new responsibilities: the management of renewable resources, making land tenure secure, and the planning of local development. The municipalities have become the most important administrative level, while the more recently created regions are setting up their own development plans.
