USIP|xx Phased-Array Technology for Gapless Oblique Flaw Detection and New Geometry Evaluations with ROT and ROWA Ultrasonic Testing

2014
To date, ROT and ROWA ultrasonic testing machines are well established and reliable state-of-the art systems for tube inspection. The implementation of the new USIP|xx Phased Array technology offers considerable new features and advanced testing capabilities for both types of testing machines. These are necessary in order to meet with current and future requirements on international and company standards. Moreover, it provides opportunities to integrate successive inspection cycles – so far processed in sequence - into one inspection procedure. The simultaneous and parallel operation of phased array elements by using the Paint-Brush method with USIP|xx allows multiple measurements and evaluations with one test cycle. As consequence, a faster throughput speed and a higher shot density can be realized. Further benefits are obtained by extended geometry evaluations, i.e. the calculation of external and internal tube diameter and ovality. For rotary testing machines a gapless testing of oblique flaw orientations up to 20° can be reached.
