Prevalence of Dysphagia in Patient Visiting Ear Nose and Throat Clinic at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital

Abstract The purposes of this research was to study into the prevalence of dysphagia and factors related to the dysphagia in patients visiting Ear Nose Throat Clinic at Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The subjects were 211 patients aged more than 20 years, who never been diagnosed with dysphagia and had no memory problems. They received treatment at the Department of ENT during office hours between February to July, 2020. The tools used were a questionnaire about general information, Clinical Swallowing Examination Form and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) for evaluating dysphagia. The variables were determined by percentage, mean, standard deviation and Chi-square. The result of this research were as follows: the prevalence of dysphagia were 6.2%. Mean age were 68.9±14.4 years old. Gender, age, BMI, past medical history, marital status were significantly related with dysphagia (p< 0.05).
