Characterization and antibacterial properties of biogenic spherical silver nanoparticles

Abstract In the present work, eco-friendly, low cost, and bio material obtained from silk textile industry waste sericin was used to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) at room temperature. The silk sericin (SS) acted as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The synthesized AgNPs were characterized by using UV–Visible spectroscopy (UV–Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements, high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiment. The UV–Visible spectra of the SS-AgNPs showed absorption peak in the wavelength range of 430–435 nm, formation of nanoparticles. The XRD study demonstrated that crystallinity nature and the average size of the formed AgNPs was around 7.54 nm. TEM images revealed the spherical shape and average particles diameter is around 6.79 ± 1.50 nm. Further, in vitro antibacterial activities of SS-AgNPs was investigated against some human pathogens and the results significant antibacterial activity.
