The shape of a growing crystal : a numerical study

1995
Abstract A numerical model of the “crystal-solution” system based on experimental data on K-alum sulphate was proposed. The development of the crystal shape under different physical and chemical growth conditions was studied. A correlation between crystal shape and supersaturation during crystal growth was not observed. We introduced the idea of a “steady shape” of the crystal. The correlation between the shape and the growth conditions was measured. A parameter indicating the dynamic equilibrium of the growth system was introduced. The crystal growth process can be optimised using the proposed model.
