Hepatic Artery Infusion Therapy for Colorectal Cancer Liver Metastases

2018
Hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) refers to infusional chemotherapy delivered through the hepatic artery for the treatment of primary and secondary liver malignancies. In colorectal cancer liver metastases, HAI has been extensively studied over the last several decades. The combination of HAI and systemic chemotherapy is associated with higher response rates and improved oncologic outcomes when compared with systemic therapy alone. HAI has an established role in the adjuvant setting (after complete resection of liver metastases), as well as in the unresectable setting. In this chapter we review the general principles underlying HAI chemotherapy, technical aspects of pump placement, and oncologic outcomes.
