During pregnancy the therapy shouldn’t be discontinued in presence of generalized tonic-clonic seizures, since seizure-related risk is higher than risk of malformation due to therapy. Adequate therapy is more preferable. It’s necessary to increase dosing frequency by dividing daily dose to 4–6 times. Treatment shouldn’t be started (as far as possible) or it should be limited in 20–40th day, when neural tube closes and spina bifida couldn’t be excluded. Antiepileptic drugs intake must be associated with administration of folic acid 4–5 mf/day, especially in first trimester.
