Renal calculi are solid concrements which form in the urine of the renal passages. Urine itself is a highly complex fluid containing crystalloid substances (usually in a state of supersaturation) and colloidal substances, hence the difficulty of pin-pointing not merely the multi-factorial causes but also the mode of stone formation.
