On September 11, 2001, America received a horrific, first-hand demonstration of asymmetric warfare: the unconventional strategies that self-proclaimed enemies of the United States, unable to stand up to U.S. conventional military power, have increasingly adopted to achieve their aims. The use of hijacked airliners to attack the World Trade Center and the Pentagon underscored the fact that the United States is at war with a global network of terrorist forces as well as the groups and states that support them.
