Scattered Ground-roll Attenuation for 2D Land Data Using Seismic Interferometry

2011
We investigate the combination of a novel 2D point-receiver acquisition geometry and model-driven seismic interferometry to predict and subtract crossline scattered ground roll in land seismic data. Using synthetic data containing strong scattered ground roll, we show that two additional (sparse) source lines parallel to the 2D seismic line allow for the prediction and subtraction of the crossline scattering from common shot gathers. Using stacked sections, we show that the majority of the scattered ground-roll energy is removed, while preserving the underlying reflections. The method is applied after a conventional frequency-wavenumber filtering step that does not attenuate crossline scattered waves. Thus, the combined frequency-wavenumber and interferometric filtering approaches are an improvement over the use of only a frequency-wavenumber filter.
