Abstract Powder characterization and manufacture of a nasicon Na 3 Ti 2 Si 2 PO 12 membrane. Nasicon powder was first prepared using the colloidal route of the sol-gel process and characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. Then the sol of nasicon was coated onto a Moroccan clay macroporous support by slip casting. The membrane characteristics were determined by scanning electron microscopy and N 2 adsorption-desorption. Pore diameters are in the range 3 to 5 nm and the membrane thickness is about 103 μm. Water permeability is equal to 5l/h.m 2 .bar.
