A method implemented by machine to activate a mobile device (100), the method comprising: issuing from a mobile device having a SIM (302A, 302B, 302C) card currently inserted an activation request, the activation request (304) comprising data identifying uniquely the device and data that uniquely identifies the currently inserted SIM card; stored in the mobile device a record of signed activation (308) comprising the device data and data SIM card, having been generated and signed activation record for server activation (110) responding to the activation request (304 ); verifying the activation record regarding the currently inserted SIM (302A, 302B, 302C) card; and registering the device with a communications network after successfully verifying the registration of activation.
