Material Investigations on Guitar Strings

Abstract The present investigations on e-guitar strings were performed aiming at providing an overview of the variety of materials used for strings and evaluating the strings’ influence on sound generation. The main emphasis of these investigations is on determining the used materials and dealing with questions regarding the metallographic preparation of these material compounds made up of a wrap wire and a core wire. The main difficulties during the preparation arise mainly from very thin-walled sample areas which are characterized by different chemical compositions and an arrangement close to one another and their mechanical-technological pretreatments.
